The beauty and power of the rainforest juxtaposed to the beauty and power of “civilization,” on of my approved themes. Who is the moral savage? Powers Boothe plays a construction engineer building a dam in the rainforest that is increasingly changing the structure of the most critical accurate estate on earth. Not only is it effecting the plants and animals, creating desert where there was once rich vegetation, but it is affecting the indigenous tribes in horrendous ways. Charley Boorman plays the attractive young son who is kidnapped by the leader of the “Invisible People.” His father and mother (played by the elegant Meg Foster) spent the next ten years searching for the boy as he is being raised in tribal customs.

Meanwhile, as the living location for the tribes grows increasingly smaller, the “Invisible People,” who are basically qualified hearted, land loving indigenous people who maintain to themselves and only want to survive, are increasingly threatened by the “Fierce People,” a carnivorous, cannibalistic tribe who are desperately seeking set for themselves.

We peer Tomme grow up, learn from his unusual “father” who loves him dearly and was perhaps initially attracted to the tyke’s golden blond hair and his contain need for a son. We glimpse Tomme go through a ritual rite of passage that sends him on a unsafe quest for the special green rock that allows what are now his people to become “Invisible.” It is in this quest that Tomme and his father putrid paths again, and a lesson is learned about the cost of the harm civilization has brought to what is truly a glorious and rich country better off left alone.

For a long time I couldn’t score this movie anywhere. Not even at amazon.com. I treasure the copy I did finally bag. I am thrilled to stare that it is now available on DVD, but would like to ogle a DVD created with educational “special features” about the rain forest and the fight to hold it. That’s really what this movie is all about. Notice it now, before it gets away again.

Bill Markham (Powers Boothe), an American engineer supervising a development project in the Amazon Rainforest has his young son Tomme (Charley Boorman) abducted by an elusive Indian tribe known as “The Invisible People.” Bill spends the next ten years combing the jungles trying to pick up Tomme and bring him home.

When they are finally reunited Tomme is now a young man and the adopted son of the tribal chief and shaman (Ruy Polanah) . He has also chosen a wife and is about to be married. And so the struggle begins, not only between father and son, but between two very foreign cultures in search of mutual belief and acceptance.

While the two fathers and son work through the implications of their chance meeting grief looms on the horizon. A neighboring tribe of cannibals known as “The Fierce People” will soon attack. The ensuing confrontation will force Bill to join in the battle in an pains to defeat a mutual enemy.

Everything about this film is first rate. Acting (Powers Boothe, Charley Boorman and Ruy Polanah), directing (John Boorman), cinematography, and screenplay. It even has an significant message to acquire across (saving the Rainforest) and does so without preaching to the audience or jeopardizing the integrity of the account.

It has been some twenty years since the release of this film, yet it calm remains to be relatively unknown by a gigantic majority of movie watchers. Why it hasn’t received more attention by now is a total mystery to me. This is one of the suitable undiscovered gems of cinema that everyone should experience. Definitely one of my all-time top ten films!

Like most baby boomers, I’ve watched this film dozens of times in the past on broadcast TV, then VHS tape, then LaserDisc … but I had never actually SEEN “The Wizard of Oz” until this newly restored DVD came out. It’s an incredible transfer. The sepia-tone Kansas sequences are startlingly though-provoking and sure, and the Technicolored world “Over the Rainbow” is truly beautiful. I found myself fascinated by details I had never noticed before: the glittering corn stalks in the Scarecrow’s field; the mirror-like floors of the Emerald City; the polished buttons on the guardsmen’s uniforms. Incredibly, even the individual grains of red sand in the Witch’s hourglass stood out and glistened! All these minor-but-sumptuous visual details served to heighten the magical spell that the film has always woven, enhancing the performances, the narrative, and the music.

The DVD extras are a mind-boggling embarrassment of riches. The “Making Of” documentary hosted by the incomparable Angela Lansbury is worth the mark of the DVD alone, but there’s so grand more: an international poster gallery, interviews with cast members, deleted scenes, production stills, radio clips, etc, etc. There’s enough material to withhold even the most casual viewer fascinated for hours, and a good Oz buff will be occupied for days!

If you only bought a DVD player to gape this one disc, it would well be worth the expense. Treat yourself, and tumble in savor with this classic film again … for the first time.

I was unprejudiced critized for foisting off the following review of the 3-disk DVD spot as a review of the novel Blu-ray. I didn’t; Amazon did. As anyone who’s been here for a while will spy, Amazon throws all DVD reviews into the same bucket, regardless of the edition. So don’t blame me.

There’s no need to discuss “The Wizard of Oz” itself, a classic among classics (though I’ll have something to say about its “philosophy” later on) . You probably want to know whether the UltraResolution transfer justifies the occupy.

It does. Oh, yes it does.

“The Wizard of Oz” has always looked fine, one of the better Technicolor films. Unlike “Gone With the Wind”, which was generally dusky and desaturated, and which UltraResolution greatly improved, I didn’t seek information from distinguished enhancement for “Oz”.

Was I ever scandalous. I stared with my jaw hanging originate. “Oz” is the best UltraResolution transfer by far — and the others were not exactly chopped liver.

The improvement in detail and sharpness is startling, especially as the current prints did not seem obviously lacking in either. Even more improbable is the expansion of the tonal scale. Sunless scenes (particularly those in the forest and outside the “witches” castle) are now filled with rich detail. Have you ever noticed how graceful the Winkies’ red, white, and gray uniforms are? I hadn’t — until now.

These enhancements combine form the biggest improvement of all — a major revelation of _texture_. The “feltiness” of many costumes is clear. The burlap of the Scarecrow’s face is now plainly visible, particularly in the close-up where he misstates the Pythagorean Theorem. And the Lion’s costume is a thick pile of fur you want to come out and stroke. You can gawk every last strand of hair.

I’m exaggerating only slightly when I say the improvements of this UltraResolution transfer are not considerable less than those from cleaning the Sistine Chapel’s frescos. It’s as if layers of murk and grime — that you never even knew were there! — have been stripped away. Until you belief it, you cannot imagine what this film (that is, the novel camera negatives) _really_ looks like. It’s a shame the people who created “Oz” never got to contemplate it this blueprint.

The image quality is so high that I often felt as if I were looking through a window at live performers. (Well, almost.) No matter what versions you already have, you won’t be disappointed with this one. I watched it twice in two days, and I might even opinion it a third time tonight.

My only quibble is that several matte paintings do not blend properly, because the hues at the join lines do not match those of the scene. This could have been fixed; I suspect it seemed too noteworthy work for a slight improvement. (A friend suggested that these sorts of things are left in because videophiles like finding them.)

As to the differences between the two- and three-disk sets… The latter includes a packet of recent programs and promotional material of the sort we haven’t seen in 40 years ago. (Remember the 50-cent deluxe programs for road-show films? ) There’s also a position of 10 reproductions of Kodachrome publicity photographs. For this viewer, these extras alone clarify the higher mark.

The third disk will be of most interest to lovers of all things Oz. It includes a handsomely produced biography of L. Frank Baum (spicy enough that you might want to see it more than once), plus all the quiet Oz films and a Technicolor Oz cartoon. The existence of these is famed to anyone familiar with the history of Oz productions, but they’ve never appeared (as far as I know) in any home-video format.

The films are problematic. The two from Baum’s production company are the best — they have style, charm, and imagination. The others are cheesy ripoffs that maintain tiny relation to the novel book. The Larry Semon — a once wildly-popular but now virtually forgotten cartoonist and humorous * — version is especially wrong, as it is shrimp more than a vehicle for Semon’s designate of physical comedy. The Baum estate is at least partly to blame — _any_ movie version must have seemed more blooming than none, especially as the technology to produce a convincing version of “Oz” would not exist for another 15 years.

The film’s opening titles praise the book’s “friendly philosophy”, which seems to be either “You already have everything you need to be joyful”, or “The respond to your problems lies within yourself”. These are not so remarkable “pleasant” as reflections of the hard-nosed “All your problems are your gain fault” and “If you’re not a success, it’s because you’re idle” homilies that grew out of the mammoth opportunity for personal development and material success this country offered.

I hold L. Frank Baum had something a bit different in mind. “The Wizard of Oz” is a fairy memoir in which magic has no bearing on the issues at the center of the yarn. I acquire Baum wanted to discourage children from fantasizing that magic could be a solution to one’s problems.

So… he has the four principals get a grueling go to the Emerald City, then obtain the wizard is a humbug. (What a shame the blander “untrue”, “fraud”, or “phony” have replaced that scrumptious word.) Now… the ask you’ve been waiting for the reply to… Is the Blu-ray region worth the effect?

I viewed the Blu-ray on a Pioneer 60″ Pro Kuro, fed from a Sony BDP-S550. I also watched the DVD on the Pioneer (fed from the same Blu-ray player), and on a 36″ Sony 400-series WEGA “improved definition” TV (fed from a Sony DVP-S7000) .

The DVD remains a terrific DVD, and looks terrific on a high-quality 480i monitor. (Examine the preceding review.) It was, and calm is, a demo-quality DVD.

When played on the BD player, and upconverted to 1080p, the DVD’s image on the Kuro is radiant darn estimable — the sharpness and detail are at least “acceptable”. But when you play the Blu-ray disk, the image goes from “acceptable” to almost-startling. Two examples… Effect the enhanced detail and texture in the weather-beaten wood above the WWE’s unimaginative legs. And in the crowd scenes, you can peer (honest about) every Munchkin face. There is virtually no smearing of detail.

So… should you accelerate upright out in a buying frenzy and find the BD edition? It depends.

The DVD is apt enough for an helpful record on a high-quality SD monitor. But even upconverted, it isn’t expedient enough for a _large_ HD explain. If you have, say, a 40″ display; your BD player has a proper upconverter (not all do) ; and you don’t sit “on top of” the camouflage (as I do) ; you might discover slight disagreement between the DVD and the Blu-ray.

But if you’re a video fuss-budget (as I am) and sit closer than the “experts” recommend (why _shouldn’t_ you? ), you will almost certainly recall the Blu-ray. It’s your call.

A few remarks on the extras… The wristwatch, as the kid in the Ally bank commercial says, is a portion of junk. The manufacture shows no particular style, wit, or imagination. And as others have said, “The Dreamer of OZ” is a unhappy transfer, very badly unpconverted to 1080. It is not of acceptable quality, and should have been save on the DVD disk.

I will near encourage later (I hope) with some more comments on the sound and the other extras. Forcing yourself to repeatedly perceive substantial chunks of a movie, regardless of its quality, is an ennervating experience.

As the note begins we seek a young girl named Nobue who says she’s a 16-year veteran high school student, but when she pulls out a cigarette, we learn the truth, that she’s actually 20 years old-fashioned and it becomes readily apparent that she’s a chain smoking borderline alcoholic, but I exhaust those terms in the most definite blueprint. She’s not very equipped to handle the adult world. Nobue even has to constantly ask her younger sister Chika for money, which she uses as a lever to castigate her in a peculiar role reversal. Chika’s next door neighbor, Miu, is an annoying, but energetic and hilarious ball of kineticism who instead of using the front door, leaps over from her roof to Chika’s and through her window (where she occasionally falls flat on her face) . Speaking of, when she says something that Nobue doesn’t like, the next scene generally shows Miu lying facedown after Nobue takes her out! Matsuri is the girl’s other friend, and is a troubled demure intelligence who constantly has a deer-in-headlights contemplate of panic on her face when someone addresses her. The group is rounded out by a unusual transfer student who happens to be a foreigner named Ana Coppola. Her parents are English but she’s lived in Japan so long that she fears that she is losing her cultural identity. She even thinks in Japanese now. In an danger to stem this absorption she plans to act like she can’t thunder Japanese and act like an ignorant gai-jin. Of course, her plans go awry when Chika, Miu, and Matsuri overhear her talking to herself in perfectly fluent Japanese! Their secret will bind Ana to their circle, even if they all do fun of her exclusive last name.

I loved everything about this first volume of Strawberry Marshmallow. First of all, it is hilarious. The director handled the prove in such a contrivance that the humor is always controlled without curious too hastily and getting too wacky, such as in a indicate like Kodocha. Marshmallow is great more quieter than that and achieves worthy of its punchlines in stillness and reaction shots. But don’t come by me defective, there’s plenty of slapstick, such as when the girls are hitting each other over the head with Osaka fans to hold each other awake to execute Nobue an ashtray for her birthday. The character designs are cute, simple, and radiant and the animation makes them skedaddle well. The Japanese assure acting is strong. The plight you can hurry into with shows like this is the ever-present effort of annoying tiny girl drawl actresses. Thankfully, there is no quandary with that here as all the girl’s voices sound natural and superior to the ear. You can deliver lots of pain went into designing the gawk and feel of these girls. The dvd also features a short 5-minute Episode #0 in which the girls and Nobue are on a spaceship trying to land on Earth with cigarette supplies running obscene! I feel as though this will become one of my approved all-time anime and is an instant classic!

I would also recommend Azumanga Daioh, Bottle Fairy, Nanaka 6/17, and Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat.

If you’re the type that melts at pictures of cute kittens and puppies then these rambunctious fab 4 will catch your heart instantly!

Although the English dub is respectable, because of an ongoing “English Language” joke in the series, it is best to view the Japanese version first (it’ll obtain it easier to “gather”)

As to who is my common? They are all so adorable but Miu steals the trace (literally, she would probably capture it if there was one) .

For a SERIOUS lack of another analogy, I would probably relate Miu as the Cartman of the group (except Grand cuter) as she drives the place and creates the action. A self-aware and intent note stealer.

What has been said about the Shaded Knight cannot be elaborated on - so I won’t. The film is muscling its map into my #1 celebrated humorous movie adaptation of all time.

The reason for my review is in hopes of saving you some money. This double disc Special Edition doesn’t boom the tag you pay for it. There isn’t even deleted scenes!!! I would assign your very hard earned dollars and choose the single disc version and wait for the inevitable ULTIMATE re-release that will reach later on down the road.

But nonetheless, a astronomical film - you will not be dissapointed; I impartial wish the studio would have given a better Special Edition release than what we have here. So delight in!

Christopher Nolan has a vision. And whether you agree with it or not, he undeniably completes it in “The Black Knight”–a vicious, enthralling, overwhelming, shimmering event- film that re-defines ‘comic-book-flicks’. In Nolan’s grim, dark-depiction of Gotham-City (the crime-ridden hell protected by legendary superhero Batman), the director strives to acquire everything dependable (something he began in the well-received “Batman Begins”) . He makes it plausible, possible. And yet there’s more to it: honest as ‘Begins’ was a dissection of sage, the nature of symbols and heroes, ‘Knight’ is the escalation of that thought. It’s a biblical- confrontation of ‘good-and-evil’, yet as ‘good-and-evil’ really exist: a conflict of ideals, something that can’t be purely-defined but that is relative to a viewpoint. In Nolan’s world, the line of villainy and heroism isn’t crossed… it’s non-existent. The bad-guys don’t glimpse themselves as bad-guys, and as such something so unnervingly-real comes across it might wing past some people’s minds (no insult to anybody, it’s fair favorite that people don’t witness deep into ‘popcorn-flicks’) : the battle is a complete ambiguity.

The film runs at nearly 2.5-hours, yet never ceases to lose interest or momentum. It doesn’t demolish a scene or moment; every event is utilized and essential. ‘The Shaded Knight’ tells a record worth telling and it takes the obliging amount of time to yelp it. Action-sequences are frantic, old-school, eye-grabbing stunts (vastly respectable to ‘Begins’) and in their chaotic intensity we eye that they assist purpose to the narrative, yet more absorbing are not played for pure entertainment-value: we are meant to contemplate, horrified, simply hoping that the outcome will go the hero’s device. Attention is never lost because we are immersed in a breathtaking, almost completely-unpredictable yarn (it packs many a shock), that makes us believe and more importantly gains our emotional-investment. We reach to care for the characters, because they are believable, developed, and personified fully.

Everyone has great-chemistry together. Maggie Gyllenhal is a more old-fashioned Rachel Dawes than Katie Holmes. Morgan Freeman provides his authoritative presence to the role of bad- gadget-inventor/Wayne-Enterprise CEO Lucius Fox, and under anyone else’s portrayal, the section would be less-memorable. Gary Oldman underplays his world-wearied lawman with such honest-nobility, you never feel for a second any of its forced-acting. The irreplaceable Michael Caine makes a gentle, reassuring, father-like presence as Alfred, and the movie would surely fail without his strong-presence and interjected-moments of light-humor.

And while everyone (rightfully) pours the praise unto Bale and Ledger, I contemplate most are glancing-over Knight’s breakout-performance. As Harvey Dent, Aaron Eckhart does more than absorb himself in the company of such a renowned-cast. He makes his presence known, whether he’s playing on the easy-going charisma of Gotham’s ‘White-Knight’ or the broken and damaged, twisted-soul of Two-Face. He achieves a full-impact with the tragedy that comes unto his character, and so closely connects with Dent, that he makes his hurt tangible for us: we sympathize even as we become panicked. He captures both facets of each personality flawlessly.

Now, some people cite that ‘Knight’ has a potential fatal-flaw in the supposedly wooden- acting of Christian Bale. Admittedly, his development is not as gargantuan as in ‘Begins’ (yet that film gave us such a friendly psychoanalysis of Wayne, we hardly need more), yet what Bale pulls off is admirable. Wayne is not an eccentric personality. He is a disillusioned man who can hardly rep any joy in having no family, giving up his love-interest and spending his life fighting a battle that may never extinguish. He’s sunless and conflicted, and Bale plays up on that brooding-mood by making Wayne gawk as though a thousand dark-things were on his mind. He’s not wooden…he’s a humorless, peaceful individual. Even when Wayne is acting as a frivolous playboy for the public, every now and then Bale offers us a noteworthy scrutinize that reminds us its all a façade; that deep down, something more apprehensive irks him. Occasionally he offers a broken-smile when exchanging banter with Alfred, letting us know that beyond the dour depression of the Caped-Crusader lies a damaged human-being. It is only in the guise of a growling masked-man, that he can unleash his lawful, ferocious personality.

Finally, who could forget Heath Ledger. Now, when he was first-announced for the fragment, I was (along with many other people) asking myself: “Why? “. Mr. Ledger had proved with ‘Brokeback Mountain’ he could stutter a potent performance. But he hadn’t before. It is only, after seeing this film, that I know the acknowledge to ‘why? ‘: I study the significance of his loss.

When Heath appears in this movie, he is completely unrecognizable. His vow is distinctly-altered; a near-whiny, pedophile-like tone that sends shivers down the spine. His face is completely splattered with makeup that renders him both freakishly-nightmarish and strangely-funny. And when you sight him, you don’t consider it’s him. In this, his final performance, Ledger proved he was a chameleon. His two iconic performances in this, and ‘Brokeback’, could not be more different. I am convinced he could have been anything in his career. He commits so intensely to character that the line of actor/portrayal dies. His every tick and gesture only further-enhances his character. Heath never hams the role up or goes for something cheap: he delivers a fully-immersed reveal of psychotic madness…or do we objective impress him that to feel safer? The movie writes the character brilliantly; blending hideous truth into his every social-accusation, and making us put a question to why we laugh at his sick-jokes.

‘The Murky Knight’ has had an incredible-amount of hype running for it, from the get-go, mounting ever-higher, until Heath Ledger’s too-soon death. And the finished-product does more than exceed all of the near-impossible expectations placed on it. It becomes something noteworthy richer than a super-hero-franchise-saga. Christopher Nolan has opened a unusual door in cinema: allowing action-flicks to become more serious, pleasurable of intelligence. He has transformed this into a portion of artwork, chubby of beauty, horror, moral-conundrums. This movie has changed things…forever.

1964 to 1969 - 62 classic cartoons were produced at this time for theaters. These are the best of the batch and truly creative, some winning awards. In 1969 the Pink Panther was retired and sold to Television with The Inspector for a half-hour Saturday Morning expose on NBC. (Remember that classic Pink Panther car shown in the opening titles? )

1971 to 1977 - 30 more cartoons were produced for theaters, bringing the Pink Panther out of theatrical retirement. These were a petite more hit & miss that the first wave of cartoons. Mild being produced for theaters, they had more time & money to obtain these than the next wave. The same first wave directors worked on this wave. These also got sprinkled into the Saturday Morning TV demonstrate after their theatrical urge.

1978 to 1980 - 32 cartoons were produced for the 1978 Pink Panther TV expose on a tiny budget & short time period. Current directors were brought in to serve the modern directors with the increased one year work load. The descend in quality shows on these shorts, you feel like you are watching a Saturday Morning cartoon. These rapidly made, obscene budget cartoons were then re-packaged to theaters over three years.

Non of these cartoons were ever shot widescreen, so it is helpful that this DVD will be presented corpulent frame.

Some improvements over the previous “Jet Pink” DVD cartoon collection:

All 1960’s cartoons have improved fidelity soundtracks.

PINK PHINK has the novel theme song restored on the waste credits.

JET PINK has great report & sound improvements & new titles are restored.

IN THE PINK OF THE NIGHT has the lawful colors in the opening titles.

Some unpleasant notes:

1) A sampling of some of my well-liked cartoons revealed some to have the TV laugh track: PINK Scheme, PSYCHEDELIC PINK, PINK TUBA-DORE. There are probably more. The DVD capabilities should have allowed us to eye each cartoon with either soundtrack as an option! Also a ‘music only’ sound track would have been nice.

2) You will need Jerry Beck’s “Pink Panther Ultimate Guide to the Coolest Cat In Town” book (sold here on Amazon.com) to guide you through the cartoons you want to leer. The title list on this DVD with the generic “Pink ….” titles that these cartoons have will not succor you pick up that ‘toon you want to behold.

3) The storage case is poorly designed, disc 2 rests on top of disc 3 & disc 4 rests on top of disc 5. If you want to belief Discs 3 or 5, you have to capture the top disc off first (procure a ample non scratching area to effect it) and then select the disc you want to glance. Then replace the above disc so that it doesn’t pick up damaged.

You may want to invest in some extra cases to achieve the discs from future harm.

HINT: Site DISCS 4 & 5 UNDER DISCS 2 & 3, they have the later 1970’s cartoons that you will probably not recognize remarkable. This plan they are out of the intention.

Tom and Jerry’s second DVD collection of classic cartoons has been butchered, like the first one. “Mucho Mouse” is shown in a pan-and-scan format, where no less than 40% of the picture is chopped off of the sides. Tom and Jerry should be shown in their original format. I don’t care about the “black bars,” I want to see the full picture, and that is not what I see on this DVD. I wouldn’t recommend this DVD even at a bargain price. Don’t support censorship and avoid this DVD!

While I’m very happy to see Tom and Jerry showing up on DVD finally, this volume is somewhat disappointing in comparison with the earlier Tom and Jerry’s Greatest Chases. For one thing, it’s 30 minutes shorter; there are 14 cartoons on that first disc, and only 10 on this one. For another, there are no real “extras” (those listed are really aimed only at children, which is fine–but come on…). The first disc saw a nice clip with Jerry and Gene Kelley dancing. Surely there are other archival ‘extras’ that could be included.

Thirdly–and this is something of a minor point–the “menu” music is atrociously bad. Child-synth. Just leave it without music next time or use actual archival sound from the cartoons.

I sincerely hope future releases will also delve into the less “PC” T&J, with “mammy” yelling “Thomas!” at the cat. I’d also like to see some of the Chuck Jones cartoons from the 60s put out in this series.

The Pluses:

* You get great cartoons. Tom and Jerry are always good (well, until you get to those godawful Gene Dietch monstrosities).

* Picture and sound quality are what you would expect.

* The disc has a -very- convenient “Play All” feature (listening, Simpsons? Listening, Disney Treasures?)

Definitely worth the money, though a bit more in terms of content (akin to the first release) would be preferable.

The most necessary describe of World War II was an intensely arresting drama about a middle class British family and its strong matriarch standing up against the tragedies and terrors of the onset of World War II. The movie was “Mrs. Miniver”.

“Mrs. Miniver” remains today one of the most remarkable and compelling films ever made about the hardships of war even with the lack of a single battle scene. Garson won an Academy Award for her shimmering portrayal, and rightly so, for she invests her scenes with a well-behaved determination and will: In one scene, she holds a German soldier at bay with a gun in her kitchen as her children sleep upstairs. In another scene, she reads “Alice in Wonderland” to her children in a bomb shelter as bombs inaugurate to plunge over them. In unruffled another scene, Garson drives with her daughter-in-law (Teresa Wright, whose charming portrayal earned her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress) through a countryside engaged in sky battle.

William Wyler’s vivid direction sears through the film and its cast, earning him an Oscar for Best Director, and for the film itself, Best Describe of 1942.

Still great after half a century, “Mrs. Miniver” is a luminous testament to the soldiers who lost their lives on the battleground- and on the homefront- in defense of their country. Wartime audiences were given a gigantic boost of morale in this movie, and that morale shines through in this indescribably mammoth film classic.

It is such a disappointment to not be able to pick up the DVD edition of Mrs. Miniver yet. This is a film I shared with my granddaughter several years ago and is a warm memory for her.

It was my pleasure and honor to meet Greer Garson at the kill of her life at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. It was her birthday and our department was responsible for the setting up of the room and the refreshments. I was to uncork the champagne. At 5:30pm, Mrs. Fogelson (her married name) was wheeled into the room, absolutely handsome at the age of 92, wearing a brocade gown that matched the beauty of her green eyes. The celebration was short, in keeping with her aged condition, but she was such a stout lady, impartial like her presentation of Mrs. Miniver. Old-fashioned, yet regal. Queenlike, yet personable.

After her party, I took flowers to her room. She had already been tucked abet into bed, but aloof so splendid, though tired. I went to her bed and she held out her hand to me. She held my hand with both of hers, and I felt as though I was the most valuable person she had ever met.

Evertime I scrutinize the movie, Mrs. Miniver, I am transported encourage to that day by her bed after her birthday. She lived only two more years, but everyone remembered her with such adore and respect. I admire having been given the very last glossy of her portfolio.

Rest in peace, beloved Mrs. Miniver.

When you look this, you may learn where some of the inspirations for ARMAGEDDON and DEEP IMPACT came from. Sean Connery gives a strong performance as a scientist trying to convince the military and government that a giant meteor five miles wide(apparently a rock from the producer’s abet garden was old and it shows!) is heading for Earth, preceeded by deadly fragments. After the talk comes some action and effects which were pleasant for the time, and sometimes smooth observe spacious even now. An avalanche in Switzerland, a tidal wave flooding Hong Kong, and as a preview of ARMAGEDDON, a great portion demolishes Fresh York(although you can snarl it’s stock film in parts, even though it’s kept to a minimum) . And the place scenes towards the kill of the movie are broad! The characters are distinguished more well-created and acted than in many films of this genre from the 1970s, particularly Connery(he makes anything worth watching when he’s in it, with the definite exceptions of ZARDOZ and HIGHLANDER 2: THE QUICKENING), Henry Fonda(as the President), Brian Keith not speaking a word of English except when he mocks the Brooklyn Dodgers(!), Natalie Wood as his interpreter and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE’s Martin Landau as a caricature hot-headed Air Force general! Altogether, if you enjoyed DEEP IMPACT and ARMAGEDDON, don’t miss METEOR. You’ll be unprejudiced as entertained!

nothing but flash and NOISE, “Meteor” has a touch of
class. This despite the unpleasant acting and cheesy effects.

I have to be different from most of the other reviewers and give this movie a plump 5 stars. It is one of my favorites. As a obsolete hookup man, crew chief, flight engineer, and door gunner, I have seen exactly the type of character assortment and wacky actions that this film portrays. There is always one that is fearful of dying. There is always AT LEAST one hung over person, usually with a barf bag within come. There is always the one that tries to skedaddle herd on the rest and maintain them paying attention to their job. There is always one glory hound that feels he must catch a shot at everybody’s job so he has bragging rights when he gets home. So this region of characters is totally credible and all were played with improbable skill. I treasure them all, even the jerk.

As for historical accuracy, it is not suitable. They based the anecdote on the Memphis Belle, but incorporated all the incidents and accidents that happened to the flying fortresses. If it didn’t happen to the Belle, her crew witnessed it. In my conception, the movie is made better for this. It also serves to educate people about the realities of WWII bomber flights. I’m all for that. The public needs to be made aware that these men went through a hell that most cannot launch to imagine. Thus, this movie performs a critical function.

As for the entertainment value … it is top of the line. You will feel the injure and dodge the shrapnel! The anti-aircraft rounds originate me catch in hastily motion! I especially like the fraction about the monkey harness and can identify fully with it. The pilot always had to force me to set aside mine on, and like the guy in this movie, it saved my bacon once. There’s unbiased no comparison to flapping in the waddle beneath an aircraft while other crewmembers try to haul you attend aboard. (But you’ll never have to be told to achieve on your monkey harness again!) Thus, I identify and empathize with his residence … literally!

I watched this mammoth movie with wonder at all the restored vintage B-17 bombers archaic in the filming. When one watches as they choose off and land with such hazardous imprecision, it’s much to realize how far we’ve arrive technologically since those unsafe days of daylight bombing by the Americans (the Brits went at night) and the murderous losses over German skies. All of this as depicted was before we developed the P-51 with its distinguished longer range and its ability to escort the bombers to the target dwelling to fend off Luftwaffe fighters who shot down so many bombers in 1942, 1943, and 1944.

This is a fabulous movie, very factual, authentic, and quite engrossing. Starring Matthew Modine as the Pilot of the fabled “Memphis Belle”, the first bomber crew to effect its mission tour and be returned to the states (to sell war bonds, among other things), is retells the fantastic tale of how thousands of kids as depicted here went off to England to glide thousands and thousands of planes through the uncertain skies of Europe in a sustained worry to bomb the Third Reich into submission. Off they went, seeking the industrial and urban targets, luminous corpulent well they might as well have had `bullseyes’ painted on their fuselages. The costs of flying the missions in terms of lost people and planes were almost overwhelming to the Allies.

The chronicle is told in all its fullness, and one comes to search for objective how many of these courageous kids leaving the air field would never near assist, as the daily losses to German fighters, flak and mishap were immoral. Yet they went up again the next day and the next and the next, in a magnificent prove of odd courage, tenacity, and maturity beyond their tender years. This is a poignant and well-told, scripted and acted yarn brilliantly photographed on state over the hills and dales of bonny olde England, where it all unfolded in its broad yet horrible magnificence fifty some years ago. Vampire Hunter D (from the Kikuchi Manga) is one of anime�s most customary titles. The unusual movie helped justify what was to be expected of Japanese animation, and its influence was felt through titles like Akira and Princess Mononoke. So, when the sequel was announced, fans began to drool all over themselves in anticipation, and for expedient reason � everything is improved in this movie (actually the THIRD installment of the Manga), from the animation to the handling of the record, and it�s a honest pleasure to witness on anyone�s home theater.

The main character, D, is a half-human, half-vampire whose black legacy affords him near-supernatural qualities. He uses his abilities to fight nasty, and is considered the best vampire hunter in the land. His next prey is Meier Link, a gentleman vampire who has kidnapped a rich businessman�s daughter. His competition is the Markus brothers, a group of mortal vampire hunters who, together, equal D in power, cunning, and skill. With the befriend of his symbiotic Hand (a wisecracking mouth that gives D advice and offers comical relief), D sets off to procure Link, only to see that things are not what they seem.

The animation is expedient, fluid and vibrant, and the painstaking detail on the backgrounds puts the viewer smack into D�s world. Crosses are everywhere, and each gothic spire serves as a reminder of the constant threat of vampires � and of the heroism of D and his kind. The DVD transfer leaves nothing out, coming off orderly and spirited all through. The DD 5.1 soundtrack is amazingly aggressive � easily one of the best digital tracks available � and Bloodlust could benefit as a decent demo disc to note off a original home theater system. The creators should be applauded for their efforts, as sound is honest as significant as backgrounds in animation, and no detail was spared.

Much has been made about the fact that there wasn�t any Japanese track on this DVD. Guess what folks? The movie was originally recorded, and lip-synced, IN ENGLISH. That�s just, ENGLISH. So do your homework, fanboys! Really!

Even if you aren�t an anime fan, at least give Bloodlust a try; with such a grand video and sound transfer, and a sizable movie to boot, it�s hard not to rave about it.

It all started when I bought the modern Vampire Hunter D on DVD. I clicked on the special features, and rude and notice, I have seen the light. It was the trailer for the “unusual” Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust movie. I fell in fancy with the trailer upright away and watched it 24/7. Then I wanted to know more about Bloodlust so I went to the status.

I visited the situation, and I was mad to sight that they were gonna have a special near screening of VHD: Bloodlust at UCLA. This was Halloween of 2000. The theatre was packed. It was filled with goths and anime fans. The atmosphere was energetic. The lights dims and the curtains begin. After it ended, I couldn’t wait to look it again. I had to wait one more year to eye it again.

The date is August 24th of 2001. This would be my second viewing of Bloodlust. Again, I was blown away. Afterwards I got to meet director Yoshiaka. For those of you who doesn’t know, he also directed “Ninja Scroll.” Ok, enough babbling, let’s talk about the movie.

It’s not technically a sequal to the new Vampire Hunter D. It takes space in the really distant future, where vampires are dominant, but their population is dwindling. In this unlit future, mutants and demons stagger the lands, while the humans are fighting to impartial live. It stars D, our protagonist, half human and half vampire(aka a dunpeal),on a mission to rescue Charlotte from our antagonist, Meier Link, a vampire.

The yarn is inspiring as you wonder who this mysterious D is as he races time to rescue the damsel before The Markus Brothers rescues her first for the bounty. Grove, a member of The Markus Brother, would have to be one of my well-liked characters. His powers is really icy. By flatlining, he is able to control his spirit to do things his physical body can’t. Meier Link is another spirited fellow, as you deem what’s his steady motive. If he really loves Charlotte or is he planning something inappropriate.

The action in the movie is agreeable. Not as violent or as gory as Ninja Scroll, but the cold factor is composed high. And the animation is really high quality stuff. The only thing that annoyed me is one of the character’s eyes. A runt too broad. Other than that, the animation and the black atmosphere meshes in perfectly to give you a black feeling.

I reflect this is the only Anime I know of that has english as the recent language. So for those of you who are “purists”, the english dub will be the only arrangement to notion this movie. The dub is beneficial. It’s not poor to the point where you catch annoyed, but worthy enough.

In conclusion, epic is pleasurable, action is generous, animation is top-notch, dub is agreeable, overall a really respectable movie. I like this more than the new Vampire Hunter D movie. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed. Unless you are a person who wants nudity in their anime, you will be disappointed.
